Scaling & Root Planing
What Is Scaling and Root Planing?
When a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, we may recommend Scaling and Root Planing to treat gingivitis. Scaling and root planning is a minimally invasive procedure that deep cleans your teeth and gums. During the treatment, our highly trained dental hygiene team will remove or scrape off hardened plaque from the gum line. Additionally, they will remove any areas on the teeth roots that may be prone to gathering bacteria.
The Scaling and Root Planing Procedure at Central Ohio Periodontics
Before the procedure, Dr. Sakamoto may administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. His dental hygienist will then scrape off the tartar and bacteria from above and below the gum line using an ultrasonic tool or laser. After all of the decay has been removed, Dr. Sakamoto and his team will begin root planing to prevent more bacteria from accumulating along the root surfaces of teeth. Scaling and root planing is typically a procedure that is completed in a single visit.
When is Scaling and Root Planing Necessary?
If you have gum disease, it is necessary that you have all plaque and tartar removed from your teeth. Teeth covered in these substances provide the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. This bacteria would irritate the gums and cause them to bleed more easily. If you do notice that your gums are bleeding while eating or brush, this could be an early sign of gum disease, or gingivitis.
