What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure through which a frenulum (the thin band of connective tissue between the lip, cheek, or tongue) is removed or loosened.  

Two very common areas of shortened frenulum or connective tissue, are under the tongue and inside the upper lip.  Patients who have a very short frenum below the tongue sometimes have problems with tongue movement and speech. A shortened frenulum inside the upper lip can cause the gum to recede from the teeth as the frenum pulls on the gums.  Frenulum can also cause problems when fitting someone for dentures. In this case, it is can be the fault of a frenulum between the cheek and gums or the connective tissue between the upper or lower lip. A frenectomy would be necessary to allow for a proper denture fit.

The Frenectomy Procedure at Central Ohio Periodontics

The frenectomy procedure is very quick.  Dr. Sakamoto will use a local anesthetic to numb the area and then use a scalpel or laser to remove the frenulum.
