Crown Lengthening
What is Crown Lengthening?
Crown lengthening is the process of exposing more of a patient’s tooth by removing gum tissue or bone. Patients who do not have enough tooth available to place a crown or filling typically need to have the tooth crowned lengthened. Sometimes, patients have their crown or crowns lengthened for aesthetic reasons, for example, to remove excess gum tissue around the tooth for a “less gummy smile”.
The Crown Lengthening Procedure at Central Ohio Periodontics
To start the crown lengthening procedure, Dr. Sakamoto will usually use a local anesthesia to numb the area. He will then make an incision to remove the excess gum around the tooth or teeth. Then, Dr. Sakamoto will suture the newly exposed gum area so it can heal quickly.
For post-procedure instructions, will recommend a diet of soft foods for a period of time, and he will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing.
